Resilience

It’s a word we’ve heard a lot these days. The weeks became months, and the months became a year during the pandemic. Resilience has become more important than ever.

We asked mental health professionals for their thoughts on what resilience is, what it isn’t, and why it’s so necessary right now. Maybe you’re looking to learn what it means to be a resilient person. Or searching for tips on how to build your own resilience. We have some advice that may help.

What is resilience?

Resilience, by definition, is the ability to adapt or change when things don’t go as we expected them to. It involves being able to bounce back from difficult situations.

There are many challenges that may arise in a person’s life that will test their resilience. Some of these might include stress or trauma. They may also include financial difficulties, relationship problems or health issues.

“When you fall, do you get back up, and how quickly?” psychologist Nicole McCance asks. The answer to this question is deeply tied to the definition of resilience.

The three Cs of resilience

Psychologist S. Kobasa’s research suggests that there are three things that are necessary in order to be resilient:
Three C’s

1. Challenge: Seeing difficult situations as a challenge. It involves looking at failure as an opportunity for growth, not a reflection of your own self-worth.

2. Commitment: This involves a sense of purpose. It’s about being committed not just to work, but to other areas of life. This might include relationships or causes you’re passionate about.

3. Control: Understanding what is and what isn’t in your personal control. Focus on what is, as opposed to worrying about things you have no control over.
