Visualised: how all of G20 is missing climate goals — but some nations are closer than others
As world leaders gather at Cop28, these charts show how far away the major economies are from their targets
Not a single G20 country has policies in place that are consistent with the Paris agreement’s goal of limiting global heating to 1.5C and meeting their “fair share” of emissions reduction.
The assessment, based on data up to 5 December provided by the Climate Action Tracker, comes as leaders gather in Dubai for the Cop28 conference.

More powerful than available remedies?
Researchers tested the effectiveness of 6 different psychological messages across 12 countries to combat climate denial. Spoiler: They were all disappointingly weak. For decades, fossil fuel corporations and others with a stake in a continued fossil fuel economy have worked to sow doubt about the reality of climate change and the feasibility of addressing it. This disinformation campaign has had an effect.

More than 1,000 climate scientists urge public to become activists
‘We need you,’ says Scientist Rebellion, which includes authors of IPCC reports on climate breakdown, as diplomats meet for Cop28. Now, as diplomats meet in Dubai for the 28th round of the Cop climate talks, in a year predicted to be the hottest on record, and as carbon emissions continue to rise, Cramer is one of 33 IPCC authors among 1,447 scientists and academics in signing an open letter calling on the public to take collective action to avert climate breakdown.
“We are terrified,” they warn. “We need you.”

As climate chaos accelerates, which countries are polluting the most?
Countries have a mammoth task ahead as they gather for the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. They are way off track for preventing “climate catastrophe,” and scientists are sounding the alarm that time is running out to slash fossil fuels.
Data from Climate Action Tracker, an independent research group, reveals how much planet-heating pollution is still being spewed out, who are the biggest polluters and how much progress still needs to be made.

BRINGING THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TOGETHER AT THE CROSSROADS OF THE WORD
Welcome Message
At COP21 in 2015, the world agreed to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels by 2050. To remain on target, science tells us that emissions must be halved by 2030. We only have another seven years to meet that goal. COP28 UAE is a prime opportunity to rethink, reboot, and refocus the climate agenda.
Working with the UNFCCC Executive Secretary alongside the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion and the UAE Youth Climate Champion, I will strive to build consensus amongst parties to drive climate action. Together, we will prioritize efforts to accelerate emissions reductions through a pragmatic energy transition, reform land use, and transform food systems. We will work to mobilize solutions for vulnerable countries, operationalize loss and damage, and deliver the most inclusive Conference possible.
H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber,
President for COP28 UAE

We are a global team investigating the obstacles to action on climate change, all over the world
Climate accountability — investigating and understanding the various drivers of delay on climate action — is critical to understanding and addressing climate change. Our work includes both print and audio stories, and beginning in 2023, we also began co-publishing with a variety of other publications. We work with partners in a variety of ways, from co-reporting projects to syndicating content; if you’re interested in collaborating with us, please get in touch!
Our weekly newsletter rounds up the top 5 stories or studies on climate accountability that we’re reading this week; it’s never longer than a 10-minute read and lots of people tell us it’s how they stay up to date on climate.
